Underwater habitat

Underwater habitats are underwater structures in which people can live for extended periods and carry out most of the basic human functions of a 24-hour day, such as working, resting, eating, attending to personal hygiene, and sleeping.

In this context 'habitat' is generally used in a narrow sense to mean the interior and immediate exterior of the structure and its fixtures, but not its surrounding marine environment.

The CHERNOMOR-2 Underwater Oceanology Laboratory


SEALAB I was a 40’ x 9’ cylinder without windows. It housed four aquanauts for eleven days during which time they performed physical and biological experiments with ultrasonic beacons, current meters, and an anti-shark cage. It was first tested in the waters off Panama City, Florida, in 1964 and then moved 26 miles southwest of Bermuda and lowered to a depth of 200 feet. SEALAB I tested and proved the concept of saturation diving and laid the groundwork for SEALAB II and III.
