...In fact, there are some very compelling benefits to a text-based, human-readable format, Jeff Barr, Amazon Web Services technical program manager, told DBTA. "Any developer knows how to process a string of text. There's no difficult binary encoding; there's nothing hidden. It's literally a flat-out straight string." Such a text-based format also facilitates interaction between organizations, Manes added. "XML provides visibility. Since XML is text-based, a firewall can look at the information, and determine whether or not it is permitted to pass," she said. "A firewall can't necessarily look at a binary format."

..Increasingly, XML is proving its value in supporting communication with large transaction environments. Amazon, for example, now processes up to eight million XML calls a day, said Barr. Amazon Web Services, launched in July 2002, enables developers at partner sites --such as publishers and booksellers -- to access a set of programmable interfaces to retrieve and send XML-based data between Amazon and partner sites. "This service didn't exist before XML," said Barr. "If our partners needed specific information, or if they wanted to build a shopping site, they would have to download raw HTML from our site, and then analyze it and parse it. That was a very inefficient process for them, and somewhat expensive for us to support. With XML, they get a much more focused targeted piece of data, rather than just a generic chunk of HTML." Amazon Web Services was built with open source tools, and supports a range of database types and technologies, Barr reported.
