Netopia - - How to connect to a system behind a router with a dynamic IP address: "How to connect to a system behind a router with a dynamic IP address

Many Timbuktu Pro users have routers on their network, that are running Network Address Translation (NAT). Many customers have read our how-to-guide regarding configuring their routers to export the Timbuktu Pro services. Although most often this works fairly well, one problem seems to persist. With the growing popularity of broadband internet use, many ISP's have resorted to assigning dynamic IP addresses. This causes a problem for Timbuktu Pro users because they have no way to know the public address to use to connect to the remote system because their routers receive this dynamically assigned IP address.

Many customers have actually presented to us a work-around that they have found very useful. There are a few third party companies out there that provide sub-domain name services. Simply by downloading a small client onto one of your systems, that is connected to the router, the third party service can keep track of your routers current IP address. As a result, this third party service will always have your sub-domain name associated with the most current IP address. Once you have signed up for this sub-domain name, have configured your router for exporting the Timbuktu Pro services, all you have to do is enter in this subdomain name into Timbuktu Pro instead of the dynamic IP address."
