Naro rocket launch delayed

Launch of Naro Space Rocket Postponed

The launch of the nation’s Naro space rocket has been postponed hours before the scheduled liftoff at the Naro Space Center.

The ministry said it made the decision due to a malfunction in the fire extinguishing equipment on the launch pad. Fire extinguishing agents gushed out of one of the three nozzles installed at the launch pad to put out any fires or blazes resulting from the rocket’s launch.

The three emergency firefighting nozzles burst and sprayed 100 tons of the stored 300 tons of chemical-dissolved water, he said.

The corresponding system is situated on the outer side of the launch pad in order to respond to emergency fire situations, according to the Korea Aerospace Research Institute.

No visible harm to Naro or the launch pad was visibly noticeable, KARI chief Min Kyung-joo quoted the Korea-Russia joint flight test committee as saying.

The lost amount of water will not affect Naro’s launch either, Min also said.

However, as officials could not immediately confirm the exact reason for the malfunction, the launch had to be delayed.

The ministry is expected to designate a backup date before next Friday, but details have not yet been decided.

Considering that the Korea Meteorological Administration predicted clouds and rain in the region during the weekend, the launch will probably take place next week.
