Женева. 1 ноября 2008. - Известный швейцарский изобретатель и исследователь морских глубин Жак Пиккар скончался на 87 году жизни в Швейцарии. О его кончине сообщили сын Бертран Пикар и коллеги по работе.
"Один из наиболее великих исследователей ХХ в., человек, достигший максимальной глубины в мировом океане, истинный Капитан Немо, Жак Пиккар скончался 1 ноября в возрасте 86 лет на берегах Женевского озера, которое он так любил", - говорится в распространенном коммюнике.
Пиккар родился 28 июля 1922 года в Брюсселе. Он продолжил дело отца, известного физика Огюста Пикара, который изобрел стратостат и батискаф.

Born in Brussels on July 28, 1922, Jacques Piccard initially studied economics. His contacts with the business world helped to raise funds for his father's second bathyscaphe.
Jacques then changed his career and worked with his father to build what was to become the bathyscaphe Trieste. Diving with Auguste, he broke numerous records before himself capturing the World Record for the deepest ever dive, 7 miles down to the bottom of the Marianas Trench.
After his father's death, he continued the family mission constructing four mesoscaphes - submersibles designed for medium depths. These were:
